As I’m writing this from the air conditioned comfort of an oversized leather chair at Peet’s Coffee and Tea in Newton Centre, my colleagues are sweating the day away on an abandoned stretch of blacktop that is the East Providence bike path. I would be more exact in revealing the location of the crew but fear they would be overwhelmed by throngs of fans and admirers. Making a movie is glamorous business, and everyone seems to want a peek. What with the double wide trailers, fat paychecks, lavish gifts (rumors are Dan Dawson is buying every crew member a Prius with help from the cash for clunkers program) it’s easy to forget that making a movie is hard work. Just ask our producer, Claire Severance. We’ll do a little Q & A with her shortly, as I’m sure she’d like nothing more than to spend her one day off a week answering sardonic questions from some well-rested asshole in an attempt at humor for a blog nobody reads. (Claire informed me that she does not have a day off, and that, consequently, she will not be doing any fucking Q & A)

But I digress.

We’re at Day 17, right around the half way point of production, and things have been going swimmingly, depending on who you ask. There have been a few hiccups that can only be classified as black swan events, and once due diligence has been performed and I’ve completed the necessary fact checking with area police and fire departments, I’ll be able to fill you in on the details.

Stay tuned for teasers, behind the scenes footage, production stills, and interviews with the filmmakers. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of our set dog, Bella, who looks remarkably like Falcor from The Neverending Story.

Falcor?

There’s a great article over at Barrett Garese’s (UTA online division, CEO Spytap Industries) personal blog about the past, present, and future of distribution in the entertainment industry. Read it.

The business is changing, with video on demand and DVR and Netflix rendering old distribution models, well, old. People consuming content in new ways (paid and non) and the big players are scrambling to figure out how to monetize the stuff we watch online. It’s undeniably an exciting time to be on the production side of things, as technology empowers today’s independent filmmakers to create truly professional looking content at manageable price points. Check out Mark Fogarty’s Rhode Island Film Collaborative if you’ve got a project to make, and need some help putting the pieces together.

It will be interesting to see how smalltown appears before your eyes. In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted on news of all things distribution, and otherwise.

The film involves mostly actors from the Rhode Island Film Collaborative and uses crew from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We are occupying a massive warehouse in New Bedford.

We began production by shooting a brutal fight between children. These pictures are all still captures from the Red and can give you an idea of the quality of the picture (of course, these are compressed files and have not been color corrected)
